A recent study has unveiled a troubling trend: a significant number of fatal vehicle accidents are linked to drivers under the influence of THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis. This research, led by Wright State University and published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, highlights the urgent need for public awareness regarding the dangers of driving while high.

The study analyzed data from 246 deceased drivers in Ohio over a six-year period. Astonishingly, nearly 42% of these individuals tested positive for THC, with an average blood concentration of 30.7 ng/mL. This level is alarmingly above the legal limits set in various states, which range from 2 ng/mL in Ohio to 5 ng/mL in states like Colorado and Washington. Many jurisdictions enforce “zero-tolerance” laws, where any detectable amount of THC can lead to DUI charges.
